Vivienne Westwood and Consumerism

After a successful runway show at London Fashion Week, Vivienne Westwood has spoken out about consumerism. Read this interesting article below that we found in The Huffington Post…

LONDON - One-of-a-kind designer Vivienne Westwood Sunday night presented a gorgeous collection of autumn and winter outfits at London Fashion Week, then went backstage and told reporters she hopes people stop buying her clothes.

"Stop all this consumerism," said Westwood, the former high priestess of punk who has increasingly used her catwalk shows to spotlight her concern about climate change.

"I just tell people, stop buying clothes. Why not protect this gift of life while we have it? I don't take the attitude that destruction is inevitable. Some of us would like to stop that and help people survive," she said.

Her show capped a gala day at London Fashion Week, with shows by Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran and other top designers.

Long one of Britain's most celebrated designers, Westwood said she wants to try other challenges, including a television series on art and science after she shows her Gold Label collection in Paris next month.

She was in an enviable position: Her new collection had brought the house down, supermodel Kate Moss – in a black top, tight jeans and black leather cap – was waiting to congratulate her, and the audience of adoring fans included singer Janet Jackson and model Naomi Campbell.

The eclectic Red Label collection, which Westwood called romantic, began with models wearing tee 
shirts designed to call attention to the crisis in Haiti, in hopes of raising money for Campbell's effort to help mothers and babies displaced by the earthquake there.

Then it moved quickly into Westwood's special realm, a mixture of odd pairings that combined some traditional elements with looks that were new and different. One outfit mixed brightly colored plaid trousers with a polka dot blouse in orange and red – somehow, it worked.

There were mustard-colored tops and tuxedo-style jackets with pink details, Alice in Wonderland hats, and one model came out wearing an apron, sharpening a knife somewhat menacingly as she walked. Some of the most effective pieces were the simpler ones, including an elegant black cocktail dress that closed the show.

"The great thing about Vivienne is that you can wear her clothes if you're 16 or 60," said Jo Wood, a supermodel in an earlier era who recently returned to the catwalk to model for Westwood. "She's fantastic."

New York Fashion Week 2010

With the world's fashion elite once again coming together for the the 2010 New York Fashion Week, it was time to herald in the new looks for Autumn/Fall 2010. However, the 2010 week began on a sad note with the tragic news of Alexander McQueen's death, and in addition to honouring McQueen's death, designers also held a charity show to pay tribute to, and raise money for, earthquake-devastated Haiti.

Despite the somber beginnings however, the New York Fashion Week has set the tone for  new season looks, and the new trends to be on the look out for include military-inspired pieces, structured silhouettes and masculine outerwear. While it may be a controversial choice of material, fur was also a prominent feature on the runways, as were micro minis and thigh high boots. And while Autumn is the season for drab and subdued hues, colour still punctuated the runways…

French label Lacoste showed both a women's and menswear collection that featured both sophisticated neutrals and bold jewel tones, while Carolina Herrara's pieces opted for bright, floral pallettes. Marc Jacobs included metallic hues in his runway style, and Diane von Furstenberg's collection was highlighted with bright patterned dresses and blazers.

Runway Ready with Bobbi Brown

We all want to look as if we have just stepped off the runway. Now, thanks to Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, we can!  Wendy Rowe for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has shared with us the Face Chart and products used for the Fall 2010 Yigal Azrouel show at New York fashion Week.
Inspired by a collection rich in texture, the makeup for the Fall 2010 Yigal Azrouel collection is about the texture of the skin. Michelle Jank for Fairfax & Roberts

Sydney's leading couture jewellers Fairfax & Roberts are pleased to announce the launch of a new collection created exclusively by Michelle Jank.

The bespoke suite comprising a necklace, bracelet and ring is the first of a series of ranges which will be created in the Fairfax & Roberts Castlereagh Street workshop under her unique design direction.
Large and impressive shapes, a signature of Jank's work, are ever present in the collection that embraces the timelessness of 18 carat white gold and diamonds, the romanticism of pink tourmaline and aquamarine and the playfulness of citrine and topaz.

“Vintage costume jewellery is particularly inspiring because it was created during a time when people really experimented with scale, a signature of my work,” says Jank. "I like working backwards to go forwards - reworking classical vintage costume pieces to give them new life as something precious and enticing.”

"For Fairfax and Roberts I have celebrated the cycle of design using vintage pieces sourced from markets in London and Paris. I love the idea that they have a history, they tell a story. I also like pieces that tell a story or that are a reminder of someone, a place or a time.  I will be creating pieces that can be personalised and added to so customers can expand and individualise their collection pieces.”

Jank's collection epitomises a new artistic expression and celebrates the ever-growing interest in vintage jewellery - taken to a whole new level with her collaboration with the Fairfax and Roberts master jewellery artisans.

When designing, her inspirations were British society and style icon Daphne Guinness, who is a collector of haute couture and statement jewellery pieces (and more recently perfumer for Comme des Garsons) and British designer Charles James, whose ball gowns were created in the 40s and 50s.
