With sleek silhouettes and sometimes unexpected romantic styles informing the silver screen's leading ladies' fashion choices on Hollywood's night of nights, the stars once again shone on the red carpet at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Cate Blanchett was stunning in a Givenchy Haute Couture creation in the palest lilac hue, while Michelle Williams' signature understated elegance was perfectly captured in her Chanel column gown. Shades of nude proved to be a popular colour choice, and show-stopping examples of the nude palette included Gwyneth Paltrow's shimmery Calvin Klein gown and Halle Berry's exquisite Marchesa creation. Classic crimsons and shades of red and maroon were also popular colours with Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway wowing in their scarlet stunners. However, whether pastel and pretty shades of lilac like Mila Kunis' gorgeous Ellie Saab gown or Cate Blanchett's previously mentioned Givenchy number, or the deep magenta hues of Scarlett Johansson's custom designed Dolce & Gabbana gown and Natalie Portman's Rodarte dress, purple gem tones seemed to be the hottest colour of the night.
